Evaluation -- Android Generation FINAL

The overly hyped and often talked about Android is a hot topic across the nation right now. Many young and old people alike are drawn to the phone for its “cool” features. Even though there are many “Droid” phones to choose from, I will be talking about the HTC Droid Incredible by Verizon, the emphasis IPhone 4 by Apple carried by AT&T, and the HTC Evo by Sprint. These phones are rated some of the best Droid and application phones on the market, hopefully through this evaluation I will be able to narrow down which phone is best.

The HTC Droid Incredible offers all the shiny features that a “Droid” lover would expect. It has touch screen capabilities and offers a full Qwerty keyboard, 8 MP Camera, Google & Facebook Contact exchange, 8GB of memory, 1 GHZ of snap dragon processing, 3.7" HD screen, Bluetooth, GPS, and many other “cool” features. The look of the phone is also appealing. It has a slim and lightweight structure.

But, with a “Droid” phone almost all those things are expected. So, what makes this particular phone different? Have you heard of Skype? It is a free web application that allows people to talk for free. Usually this is done over a home computer or laptop, however, with the Droid Incredible you are able to do this through your phone. The phone offers 3G hotspot service, and is also WiFi capable. And, you can even talk to text. So, for all those drivers that just can’t keep their hands off their phones while texting, this phone offers you a feature where you can actually speak to the phone and it will text what you are saying. This phone also offers V Cast Media storage that allows you, for a small fee, to store any files or MP3’s that you might have online and access them through any computer or compatible phone.

So, what are the downfalls or draw backs of this phone. After looking at reviews on Verizon.com, I found these results: The battery life is poor, with all the features this phone offers the battery just doesn’t hold up. Because of all the applications and “shiny” stuff the phone freezes and isn’t very reliable. Poor antenna and signal capabilities, and poor sound quality. Charging to store information, even though the lowest price starts off at 2.99 a month it would be much easier and more cost effective for someone to pick up a flash drive for $5.00 and store the information themselves. Also, the skype feature is cool, however, it would be even better if the video chat feature was enabled and the camera was facing the front of the screen. But, in the incredible case the camera is located in the back which is a huge downfall for the phone. I also interviewed a couple friends with the Droid Incredible.

After speaking to him I realized that he wasn’t excited about this phone. He was a new owner of the Incredible, that being the case, I expected an certain excitement from him, or for him to want to show off the incredible, or explain why THIS phone was the best Droid on the market and why I should go out and purchase it today. But, that was lacking in our conversation.

So, let’s talk about price. What is the price on this phone? The full retail price with no contract is a gasping $529.99. However, if you are willing to buy a 2 yr contract with Verizon, It will drop the price to $299.99 with $100.00 mail in rebate which makes the phone $199.99. Because we are in an economic recession Verizon recognizes that not many families and average Joe people are able to afford an extra $300 dollars up front. So, they offer the 2 for 1 deal. Buy any phone (Droid Incredible included) and get the second one free. That being the case, It would drop the phone (after rebate) to $100 per phone, which is a huge discount.

I wanted to see a couple reviews on the Incredible so I went to the website Engadget.com. This website rates phones on a 10 point basis. Engaget.com rated HTC Droid Incredible 8/10. The good factors that it pointed out were: It is extremely fast, Sense UI makes Android feel polished, and great sound quality. The Bad qualities were: The screen is hard to see in the sunlight, the design might not be for everyone (it has a soft back cover designed around a race car), and the camera can be slow to focus. So, overall this phone is flashy, sleek and offers the capabilities that a Droid user would expect. But, for a person that has never used a Droid before this phone might be a little complex to navigate, and better battery life would be expected. However, for the price you are paying, the Incredible is appealing to everyone. It is overall a good and affordable phone.

So, now let’s talk about the Iphone 4. The Iphone 4 has all the fancy gadgets that you might expect, but it takes it to another level. This phone offers 3G service capabilities, WiFi, 5 MPX camera, Facebook and Google contact exchange, GPS, a large display with new “retina display features”, sleek and lightweight, comes in 16 GB or 32 GB, and many other amazing features.

So, what sets this phone apart? Where do I start. Like the HTC Droid Incredible this phone offers the feature Skype. However, with the camera facing the front you are able to get what apple calls “facetime”. This feature actually allows you to video conference a loved one. It also offers a Retina display that has 4 times the pixel amount of any previous iphone and makes it the highest resolution phone on the market. It offers HD video recording, it has a built in ipod and itunes, it has built in voice control that allows you to access a song or a contact with your voice. Also one of the coolest features I think is tethering. It gives you the ability to access the internet on your computer through tethering through your phone, which is a great way for everyone to save money on internet costs.

All of these features are very impressive. But, what are the downfalls? Because there were no reviews for the phone located on apple.com or attwireless.com I turned to Engadget.com once again. Engaget.com rates the Iphone 4 9/10. This is what they had to say: The good things included, amazing new industrial design, retina display is stunning, iOS 4 makes major improvements. The bad things included, annoying pop-up notifications, reception has improved but still has issues, and desperately needs widgets. http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/22/iphone-4-review/

With all that being said, what is the price of this phone? The phone without a package is not available, you must have a two year contract. The 16 GB phone is offered at $199.99 and the 32 GB phone is offered at $299.99. Those prices are for the phone only, and don’t included your monthly service plan. And, this phone also requires that you purchase a data plan with the phone.

All, in all the Iphone 4 is a great phone. It has many great features and is at the top of it’s market for its capabilities. However, this phone would not be appealing to average middle class family because of the price and plan structure.

The next phone I’m going to talk about is the Evo 4G by Sprint. This phone offers 4G speeds, and a 1 GHZ snapdragon processer. 4.3 inch screen, Hotspot capable, Bluetooth, memory card slot, Facebook and Google contact exchange, 3G speeds when 4G is not available, 8 MPX camera.

So, what makes sets this phone apart, what are the perks of the Evo 4G. Here are a few: 720p video capabilities. This allows you to take videos with great clarity and focus. It offers a duel camera 8 MPX from the back, and a 1.3 MPX front facing camera that allows you to do video conferences, or “skype”. The phone has Sprint TV with a kick stand that allows you to set your phone up on a table or hard surface so you don’t have to hold the phone in place. It includes WiMAX, and FM radio.

What are the downfalls of this phone? After looking at reviews on sprint.com this is what people had to say: The phone is almost too big to fit in your hand and can be awkward to carry around. The wireless range and antenna capabilities are lacking. After sifting through pages of reviews on sprint.com these are the only bad comments or “downfalls” that I could find. Most customers gave the EVO a 5 star rating.

Engadget.com rated the EVO 4G 9/10. The things they liked about the phone were: Huge, vibrant display, mobile hotspot works beautifully, WiMAX compatibility. The dislikes were: Nearly too big for one handed use, WiMAX can be spotty; 720p video quality wasn’t that great. For a full review visit http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/19/htc-evo-4g-review/.

So, what is the price for this high tech flashy phone? Without a contract the phone sells for a whopping $449.99. With a new line or eligible upgrade you can get an instant savings of $150.00 and a mail in rebate off $100.00 which drops the phone down to $199.99. This might be a little expensive for a family or average Joe.

So, which phone is most cost effective for a family or average user? I would say the Droid Incredible. The phone after rebate is $199.99 but Verizon offers that you buy one phone and get another free. For that reason the phone would be ideal for people that are looking for a great, functional quality Droid phone for a reasonable and affordable price. Which phone would be best for the Droid or application guru? I would have to say the Evo 4G. This offers all the Droid applications that you would expect but also offers much more.

Slam -- Here's a tip for you

When I walked into the restaurant I could already tell that my time there was going to be less than pleasant. With my son perched on my hip and baby bag weighing on my shoulder I began to wait. My friend was more patient than I was because after 5 minutes of seeing no one, I began looking for the “bell” that I must need to ring in order to get service.

There was no sign of anyone, customers or servers of any kind. I began saying “Hello?!” Finally, someone came to the front. The hostess looked as if she were in hell, not a smile or a Oh, I’m sorry for the wait. Party of 3? This way.

As we all shuffled to our table, which mind you they had placed right next to a can of garbage, I asked the server if she could please bring a high chair for my son. Who by this time was overly hungry, and letting us all know it by waving his arms in the air and hitting me in the face.

As I waited patiently for the high chair and our server, I realized that I was going to have to take matters into my own hands. I passed my son off to my friend, and began searching for a high chair, and a server. I found both. As I was pulling the high chair back to our table I said

“Can we please get some menus? And maybe some water..”

“Oh, yes, sorry.. I’ll be right out” she said.

The server came out in what seemed to be the dirtiest apron I’ve ever seen, and set our glasses of water down on the table. After staring at her dirty fingernails as she handed me the water with “floaties” towards the top I decided I wasn’t so thirsty afterall.

I decided to order. Because I am a server, I have a lot of sympathy towards servers and restaurants in general. I know that guests do not always take into account everything that a server is doing, so I tried to be as patient and understanding as possible.

I ordered my meal, and my sons meal and waited.. and waited.. and waited… I got my servers attention.

“Is there a problem? I’m just wondering what’s taking so long?”

“Oh, oh yeah.. Your food will be right out”

By this time my son was in full tantrum mode. He was hungry and he was not happy with me or anyone for that matter.

Finally the server brought out our dishes. And, surprisingly even though the presentation of the food looked like it was slopped on plate as a way that you would be feeding some sort of animal, the taste wasn’t bad.

After the food was delivered we saw no sign of our server again. No check backs. No water refills for my friend who had braved the “floaties” and decided to drink it anyway. Nothing. I even had to go to the front desk to get my check.

Like I said, I’m a server so I’m usually understanding to almost every situation. But, in this case… I was not so happy. I was actually pissed by this point. I grudgingly pulled out the amount on my ticket to pay my bill. As the person asked if I wished to leave a tip I said:

“Yes, here’s a tip. If you’re a server, that generally means you have to serve people. So, if you want a tip, then how about you wash your hands before you serve the food, so I don’t want to vomit in my mouth as you slide me my water which by the way had things floating in it; And, how about you actually check back at least once while I’m here. Just because you look like hell, doesn’t mean you have to treat your customers that way, and that’s a good enough tip for her.”

That was the first and only time I had complained or said to any restaurant, and it was the first time that I left “no tip” for any server. However I thought my tip was fantastic.

Top Gear

This was my first time watching a top gear episode. I found it to be informational and entertaining. The first car that was evaluated was the Fiat 500. It was a small European car. For most it would appear too “cutsie” which is what one of the Top Gear hosts described it as. But, the evaluator, Jeremy, described it as something completely different.

When he evaluated this car he was clear, precise, and knowledgeable. He explained many details and facts about the car, for example: He described that even though the car was the size of a shoe it had 160 horse power. He was enthusiastic when delivering the facts and that made me, the listener, love this car myself. My favorite line was “It’s the kind of car that would try and make love to your leg”.
The criteria he used for describing the car were, basic make-up (engine size, speed, horse power, facts), price, handling, and overall customer appeal. Even though it was obvious that Jeremy loved this car, he still presented all the facts both good and bad.

The main perks were: price, more bang for your buck, and more economical. The main criticisms were: size, the ride was a little bouncy, and the overall look of the car could be considered too “cutsie”.

Presenting a car like the Fiat 500 showed that the show was not based on personal preference at all. I don’t think that any of the hosts of the show would personally decide that they wanted that car, or it was their dream car. However, it was presented with all the facts, and came out as an overall great buy. Jeremy even said “ this car just makes you feel happy”.

On the other end in their muscle car segment, they had 3 completely different cars that were completely based on preference. James had his luxury car the Cadillac, Jeremy had his sports car the corvette and Richard had his loud masculine muscle car. Each one of those selections was based on preference. So, in that segment preference was a big part of the show.

Editing in this section was a huge part of the evaluation; the way that the camera took different shots of the car, or enhanced the rev of the engine. Those elements played a big part on what the audience took in and how they evaluated their evaluations in a sense.

Overall, I think that the episode was great. It was comedic, informative, and insightful. I would definitely watch another episode.

Same Sex Marriage: To Be or Not To Be Final Draft

The last couple years the buzz around the country about same sex marriage has been huge; especially the hype around the passing of Proposition 8 in California. The clause would allow the California Constitution to state that “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California” After the passing of the clause on November 5, 2008 the hype about same sex marriage was intensified. Supporters of the clause argued religion, education, adoption, and tax rights. People against the clause argued equality and unfair treatment, and financial and tax privileges.

First I will talk about the opponent’s arguments. Education. The argument is that if the law proposition 8 is passed that educational institutions will have to teach that same sex marriage is indeed normal and acceptable, and is in every way equal as traditional marriage between a male and female.Adoption. If Proposition 8 is not passed adoption agencies would be forced to serve all same sex couples. Religion. Clergymen and religious people argue from the Bible stating that the foundations of marriage are based solely on a man and a woman. Also, they are worried that religious sects may be accused of hate crimes if they reject or choose to not allow a same sex couple to hold ceremonies in their buildings. Tax Rights: Some religious institutions are worried that they will lose their tax exemption status. Also there are concerns that there will be people that take advantage of the tax benefits that married couples receive.

Here are the weak points in those arguments. Education. In an ever increasing dynamic country, we should educate our children on all things. In order to have well rounded, un-sheltered children that are ready for every issue and topic, we need to teach them, or introduce them to it. I do not believe that it is any schools responsibility or feel its necessary to teach “right” or “wrong” concerning this topic. But, presenting that there are same sex couples and that marriage is a union and partnership formed between two people is just stating and teaching a fact, and better preparing children for the world that is around them.

Adoption: Denying a same sex couple the opportunity to raise a child is unfair, and infringes on those couples constitutional rights. There are many same sex couples that are more fortunate than heterosexual couples and can provide a life and environment that would be wonderful for a child. Using this as a reason for why someone should not be allowed to adopt a child is like saying that all single parent children are less likely to succeed. These statistics do not take every couple or situation into account. Same sex couples should be treated equally.

Religion: A very sensitive topic for many people. Stating or basing a decision off of the Bible alone is ludicrous. If we were to live by every law or commandment that was stated in the Bible we would be sacrificing animals and getting executed for almost everything. In DEUTERONOMY 22:13-21 it says: "If it is discovered that a bride is not a virgin, the Bible demands that she be executed by stoning immediately." In LEVITICUS 18:19 "The Bible forbids a married couple from having sexual intercourse during a woman's period. If they disobey, both shall be executed." There are many things that are outdated in the Bible, and no longer apply to times today and to the way that we live our lives. There are so many things that we don't follow suit in the Bible that it is ridiculous to hold on to one passage that says that a marriage should be strictly between a woman and a man and not hold on to hundreds of other passages that require us to do equally ridiculous things. You cannot argue that the book is legitimately true and perfect when you don't follow every aspect.

The most recent controversy concerning religion is when the LDS church leader Boyd K. Packer announced in their annual meeting “General Conference” that living and practicing a gay or homosexual lifestyle is “immoral and evil”. The feedback from these statements has been heavy. Many homosexuals in Utah are outraged. Along with church members that do not agree with the words or new findings of the church concerning this topic. There is a scheduled protest October 7th regarding this particular topic. Adam (Eric) Pride in Utah Blog, Entry 1 & 2.

I recently interviewed a homosexual male to get a little bit more back story behind the reasons why same sex marriage is so important to him. His name is Jaymes Myers; he is currently a teacher at the University of Utah and Salt Lake Community College. This is what he said:

“When the government withholds same sex marriage as an option for homosexual men and woman, not only are they infringing on our constitutional rights, but there are many other things that are affected by that decision. For example; currently legislation has it set up that if a loved one, or a partner in this case, is ill or sick in the hospital only family members are able to see or attend to that person. Because that is the current rule, no same sex partnership qualifies. This is a ripple effect that spans farther than just freedom. It affects or everyday lives, and relationships.”

In 1996 the federal government passed DOMA or the Federal Defense of Marriage Act, that states that a marriage is to be recognized between a man and a woman, and that another state does not need to recognize or uphold a same sex marriage. Setting this organization in place protected many opponents beliefs and standards.

Same sex marriage is not a new topic, it has been around for years. But, because of the hype around proposition 8 in California it has brought new light to the situation and made many more people aware.

"This is a day of immensely conflicted feelings. We are profoundly disappointed the court has upheld Proposition 8. Banning the fundamental freedom to marry for same-sex couples is unfair, unjust and flies in the face of progress occurring throughout the country, from the Iowa heartland to the rocky shores of Maine. That California is taking a step backward at this moment in history is disconcertingly out of step with society's growing support for equality, and personally painful to committed couples who will be blocked from marrying in California. It is a travesty that the court has, for the first time in California history, permitted a simple majority to use the initiative process to strip a fundamental right from a minority group." Understanding the reason behind opponents wanting to ban same sex marriage is not the issue. Understanding why those reasons outweigh constitutional rights when we are a country primarily based on freedom is. It is my hope to see in the future that same sex marriage be legalized in all 50 states, that same sex partners everywhere get the freedoms that heterosexual partners are already enjoying, and that rather than stifling a very important topic because some people may not be comfortable; it is brought to light and people are educated on the importance of everyone being equal. Because as the Declaration of Independence says: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” Thomas Jeffereson, Declaration of Indepenence.
